Understanding PFAS Chemicals and Their Impact on Australian Households

Wollongong NSW

What Are PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals used for their heat, water, and stain resistance properties. They have been widely used in products like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and firefighting foams. PFAS are often called "forever chemicals" because they do not easily break down and can persist in the environment and human body (NSW EPA, 2023).

PFAS in Australian Drinking Water

PFAS contamination has been detected near industrial areas, airports, and locations where firefighting foams were used extensively. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has set precautionary guidelines for PFAS levels in drinking water. Although the immediate risk to health from PFAS in most Australian water supplies is considered low, these guidelines are based on minimizing long-term exposure risks (NHMRC, 2023).

Health Implications

Exposure to PFAS chemicals has been linked to adverse health effects, including liver damage, immune system impairment, and developmental issues in children. Even low levels of PFAS exposure over time can accumulate in the body, leading to potential health risks. Research on PFAS is ongoing, and Australian guidelines may be updated as more evidence becomes available (Department of Health, 2023).

How to Reduce PFAS Exposure

Households can reduce their exposure to PFAS by choosing water filtration systems specifically designed to remove these chemicals. Whole-house filtration and under-sink systems offer effective solutions, particularly in areas with higher PFAS contamination levels. Additionally, avoiding products containing PFAS can further limit exposure (Water Services Association of Australia, 2023).

PFAS contamination is a growing concern in the Illawarra, particularly near industrial sites, firefighting training areas, and older infrastructure where PFAS-based foams were used. Groundwater and surface water sources in Wollongong and surrounding areas may contain elevated PFAS levels, potentially impacting local water supplies. Households relying on rainwater tanks or bore water face higher risks, increasing the need for effective solutions like whole-house filters and under-sink filtration systems. Using certified water filters designed to reduce PFAS can help Illawarra residents mitigate exposure, ensuring safer water for everyday use (NSW EPA, 2023; NHMRC, 2023).
